US tariffs on furniture

Finished goods and metal-content derivatives both appear. A sofa with enough steel can be a 232 derivative. A wooden line is a different authority entirely.

Working register. Rates on the desk were last checked on 26 August 2026. They are not yet signed off against the governing proclamation or CBP entry practice. Do not treat a rate here as advice to classify, enter, or protest.

Two books, not one catalogue

Furniture is where operators blend rates they should not. A wooden case good and a sofa with a steel frame can sit under different authorities. Price them as one book and you subsidize the SKU that is actually expensive to land.

Softwood lumber is its own long file. Metal-content derivatives sit on the 232 overlay. And from 15 September 2026, listed wooden and case-good lines — seating, office and kitchen furniture, convertible beds, mattress supports — carry an additional 50% under Section 338, which CUSMA origin does not lift. None of it is solved by a single surcharge on the price list.

What the register is for

Use the desk to see which instrument a line is likely under. Then you type the rate into the calculator. Mirabilys does not classify a sofa. A wrong official rate on a published tool is worse than asking you to type 15.

What to do this week

Split the US catalogue into metal-derivative and not. Run the calculator on each book. If one book absorbs a duty the other does not, stop averaging the surcharge.

Factual answers

Is all Canadian furniture covered by CUSMA?
Origin can take the Agreement rate on qualifying goods. It does not lift 232 on a listed metal derivative, and it does not lift the Section 338 50% on furniture lines listed from 15 September 2026. Confirm all three before you quote a US retailer.
We buy US steel and sew in Canada. Does that help?
It can change origin and, on some derivatives, the share that is US content. It does not, by itself, take a core metal duty off the entry. Keep the certificate file and the metal file separate.
Should I drop US accounts?
Only after the two books are priced. Some accounts are still fine on wood. Some are not fine on metal. Dropping the channel wholesale is how you give up the profitable half.

Stop averaging the sofa and the case good

Split the catalogue, run the calculator on each book, then decide which US accounts still pay.
